Wedding planning is an exhilarating experience in a couple’s journey, but it inevitably comes with many challenges. One of the most common questions we receive at Villa Ferrari, a private wedding villa surrounded by nature, is:“How far in advance should we start planning the wedding?”and in particular,“When should we start sending out the invitations?”
In this article, we’ll guide you step by step to help you understand the ideal timing for each stage of the planning process.
When should you start planning your wedding?
The short answer: at least 12 months in advance, especially if you plan to get married during the high season (May to September) or in a highly sought-after location.
Here’s a detailed overview of the recommended timeline:
12 months in advance
Decide on a date.
Set your budget.
Begin drafting the guest list.
Book the reception venue.
10–8 months in advance
Book the church or town hall.
Hire your main suppliers: photographer, caterer (if not included with the venue), florist, and musicians.
Start choosing the wedding attire for the bride and groom.
8–6 months in advance
Send out the invitations, giving your loved ones enough time to prepare and ensure they don’t miss your special day.
Finalise the menu.
Confirm the floral arrangements and outline the wedding day schedule.
How far in advance should the notice of marriage be posted?
The marriage notice is a legal requirement for getting married in Italy, whether you are having a civil or religious ceremony. Here are the deadlines to keep in mind:
Civil Weddings
The notice must be requested from the municipality where one of the spouses resides, at least 6 months before the wedding date.
It remains posted on the municipality’s online noticeboard for 8 days.
After the posting, you must wait an additional 4 days for any possible objections.
The marriage notice is valid for 180 days (6 months).
Religious Weddings (with civil legal recognition)
The notice must be posted both in the church and at the municipality.
It is recommended to start the process at least six months in advance.
Please note: Some parishes or municipalities may require appointments well in advance or specific documentation, so it’s always a good idea to check early.
Practical Advice: Better Too Early Than Too Late
Although it may seem excessive, starting a year in advance will minimize stress, allow you to secure your dream venue and the best suppliers, and let you enjoy the preparations with greater peace of mind.
In conclusion, organizing a wedding requires time, energy, and careful planning. Starting at least 12 months in advance is the best way to ensure every detail is perfectly handled without unnecessary stress. As for the notice of marriage, six months in advance is a reliable timeframe to avoid any last-minute surprises.
